How to Make a Whiskey Sour (2 Methods)

Before you make a whiskey sour, you first need to decide how you want to serve it. You have two options.

Want a foamy top and smooth flavor?

If so, you’ll add an egg white and a “dry shake” to your cocktail shaker. This version of the whiskey sour is technically called a Boston sour, but it’s generally served as a whiskey sour on fancy bar menus. It’s best served in a coupe glass, as pouring it over ice breaks up the foam.

Safety Note: Even when mixed with alcohol, there is always a slight risk of salmonella poisoning with raw eggs (1 in 20,000). To mitigate this risk, you can buy pasteurized eggs from the store, or Pasteurize your eggs Before making this recipe, here are some things you should know: CDC egg safety informationAquafaba, the liquid surrounding cooked chickpeas, is often recommended as a substitute for egg whites in cocktails, but I tried it in this recipe and didn’t enjoy the flavor (it also foamed about half as much).

Or a bold whiskey sour on the rocks?

If so, skip the egg whites and the extra shaking step. Your whiskey choice will really shine in this version. At home, I like to make perfect ice cubes with This ice cube tray.

Best Whiskey for a Whiskey Sour

If you dare, choose a 90-proof whiskey for extra flavour that balances the sweetness of the drink and stands out against the strong lemon flavour. I recommend Bullet, Buffalo Trace or Wheelerwhich is 90% alcohol. These are all bourbon whiskeys (all bourbons are whiskeys), so it’s safe to say that bourbon is particularly well-suited for a whiskey sour.

For a smoother whisky flavour, choose a Canadian whisky like Crown Royal.
