This holiday punch is unlike anything you’ve ever had before, and I think you’ll love it. It’s not very sweet. It tastes like pear, vanilla, spice and everything nice. It’s a smooth and easy drink, even with tequila in it. Yes, tequila!
This cocktail pitcher was inspired by an oldie but goodie, ya Pear nectar cocktails with reposado tequila. This cocktail is proof that simple ingredients can produce a complex and delightful cocktail. If you’re only making one or two drinks, follow this recipe instead.
You won’t need any fancy liquor for this holiday recipe, just some pear juice, reposado tequila, plus some basic ingredients — lime juice, soda, cinnamon, and vanilla extract.
If you want to prepare some cocktails for your family or friends, this meal is just the ticket. Serve it at your holiday party! You can also share some holiday cheer by delivering a bowl of cocktails to friends or neighbors. I wrote the recipe to make eight drinks, which you can divide or multiply as you like.
Christmas Punch Ingredients
Pear juice or pear nectar
I love the Ceres brand of pear juice and pear nectar from RW Knudsen. I can’t tell much difference between the two, so I don’t think “nectar” is definitively different from “juice.” Buy what you can find.
Reposado tequila
Reposado tequila tastes slightly different from the blanco tequila used in margaritas. Reposado is a Spanish word that means rest, Which means that Reposado Tequila matures for a short time (between two months and a year) in oak barrels. Bourbon is also aged in oak barrels, so naturally bourbon and reposado tequila share some of the same oak flavors. Reposado tequila is smoother.
Since we make a whole pitcher of drinks, yes, I would say this cocktail is definitely worth buying a bottle of Reposado Tequila if you don’t have it at home. If you have a favorite bourbon, this will work too. There’s a possibility that gin would go well with these flavours, but I haven’t tried it.
Club soda or sparkling water
Carbonated water provides some hydration and bubbles, both of which are welcome additions to a cocktail.
Fresh lemon juice
Lemon juice livens up this cocktail.
Honey simple syrup
Pure honey doesn’t add well to cold drinks, so we’ll make a simple syrup with honey. It’s very easy. We’ll just heat equal parts honey and water until the honey blends with the water. We use a small amount of honey simple syrup, almost more for the honey flavor than the sweetness itself.
Vanilla extract and ground cinnamon
Just a small amount of two common baking ingredients makes this punch taste like the holidays!
Garnish with fresh lemon wedges, rosemary and cranberries
The rosemary and cranberries are more of a festive look than a flavour. You can deal with one or the other if you’re in a bind.
Holiday punch variations
- Replace the bourbon with tequila, to suit your preference (I like tequila a bit more).
- If you don’t want any bubbles, omit the soda. If you dare, use prosecco or dry cava instead of soda.
- Omit the cranberries for a cold-weather party drink that’s suitable for game days, birthdays, and the like.
- Omit the honey simple syrup for a less sweet drink, although we don’t use much of it. This drink is naturally sweetened regardless.

Notes
Recipe adapted from my own Pear nectar with reposado tequila.
* How to make simple honey syrup: We have to turn the honey into a simple syrup because it won’t mix with the liquid well on its own. Simply combine 1 tablespoon of honey and 1 tablespoon of water in a small microwave-safe bowl or the smallest saucepan you have. Heat the mixture over low heat in the microwave or on the stove until you can stir the honey into the water. That’s it.
Change it: Want more wine? Add more tequila. Outside of the holidays, simply omit the cranberries for a delicious drink that works from fall through winter. Alternative garnish options include cinnamon sticks and thin pear slices (Like him).
Make it vegetarian: Omit the honey or replace half the maple syrup with honey simple syrup. Make sure your choice of alcoholic beverage is vegan.
