Negroni sbagliato means “wrong negroni” in Italian, but can I tell you something? I think it’s an improvement over the original.
Classic Negronis are made with gin, sweet vermouth, and Campari. The Negroni sbagliato uses prosecco instead of gin, making the Negroni sbagliato lighter, bubbly and less sharp. It’s bitter but balanced, like the negroni’s fun cousin!
The Negroni sbagliato has been popular on TikTok since 2022, but my friend Reese introduced me to the Negroni sbagliato at a Christmas party last year. I’ll be sharing them with you in time for this year’s celebrations. It’s a sparkling red appetizer that you can eat before your holiday meals.
Negroni sbagliato was invented in the late 1960s Written by Mirko Stuccitto at Bar Basso in Milan. Another waiter accidentally put a bottle of prosecco where a bottle of gin should have been. Mirko noticed the difference But I thought it might be a nice variation on a Negroni saying, “Oh, today’s a sunny day, so let’s have something a little smoother.” The Negroni sbagliato is a variation on the classic – a commendable mistake!
If you appreciate a classic Negroni or AmericanoMade with club soda instead of prosecco, this cocktail is for you.
Negroni Spagliato Ingredients
This four-ingredient cocktail is very easy to make. You will also need ice. You will find the recipe below.
1) Campari
Campari is a vibrant red amaro. The brand describes the flavors as “pleasantly bitter with a velvety aftertaste. Intense aromas of orange, herbs and wood. Look for Campari near the liquor store or other Amaros in your liquor store.
2) Sweet wine like Dolin
Sweet wine is dark red or brown, unclear. Dolin is less sweet compared to Carpano Antico, so choose according to your preference.
Tip for storing wine: Wine is wine, and all wine spoils over time (the wine will keep longer than a regular bottle, thanks to brandy). Store the opened bottle of wine in the refrigerator for one to two months.
3) Prosecco
Prosecco offers some welcome tartness and sourness to balance out the bitterness of Campari. You can substitute Cava if that’s what you have. There’s no need to use expensive champagne here—the other ingredients have such bold flavors that you won’t be able to taste the difference.
4) Fresh orange twist
A touch of orange delivers a burst of flavor and a refreshing citrus aroma. It brings this cocktail to life, so please don’t skip it. To get maximum orange flavor, gently run the orange peel around the rim of the cup before putting it in.
How to make Negroni Spagliato
This cocktail usually requires equal parts of all three ingredients. I prefer my wines with an extra dose of prosecco, which softens the bitterness of the Campari and provides some extra fizz. You can adjust this drink to your preference by adding prosecco or make it a little sweeter by adding a little vermouth.

Negroni spagliato cocktail
The Negroni sbagliato is bittersweet, slightly fizzy, and citrusy. It’s the perfect aperitif. Recipe yields one cocktail; Pour whatever you want.
- Fill a rocks glass with ice (or a wine glass halfway filled with ice). Pour in Campari and sweet vermouth. Using a spoon, stir the mixture in a circular motion until it is very cold, about 10 seconds.
- Top with prosecco (equal parts of each traditional ingredient, although I like more prosecco). Swirl the orange peel directly over the drink to release the oils, then drop it in. I listen.
