Cinnamon Tea – Cookie and Kate


Let’s warm up with a cup of cinnamon tea! Cinnamon tea (té de canela in Spanish) has become my favorite drink during cold weather. It’s hot and spicy in a good way but not overwhelmingly so. Cinnamon’s inherent sweetness makes it a well-balanced drink. Plus, it makes the house smell amazing.

If you enjoy the spice factor in masala chai tea, you’ll love cinnamon chai tea, which is easy to make. Make your drink creamy with a little milk, or sweeten it with honey if you wish. I like it plain or with a dollop of heavy cream, depending on my mood.

This cinnamon tea is caffeine-free, so it’s perfect for an afternoon sip. My husband and I have taken to drinking cinnamon tea after our daughter goes to bed, and it’s a great way to relax.

How to make cinnamon tea

Although this recipe is simple, the amount of time to simmer (and steep) the tea is surprisingly important. I’ve made cinnamon tea over and over again to find the method that gives the best results with pure cinnamon flavour.

Double the recipe as needed –For every cup of water, put one cinnamon stick.

  1. In a pot, combine the water and cinnamon stick. We cover the pot so that the water does not evaporate. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil over medium heat.
  2. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 10 minutes, covered. If you simmer for longer, the tea tastes flat and turns dull brown.
  3. Remove the pot from the heat and leave it for 10 minutes. Cinnamon releases a huge amount of flavor when cooled.
  4. Pour the mixture through a mesh strainer into your cup. Enjoy warm, or refrigerate for up to four days (reheat or enjoy cold).

Shortcut option

This shortcut is excellent easy. The downside is that it uses twice the amount of cinnamon.

  1. Boil one cup of water, then pour it over two cinnamon sticks in the cup.
  2. Let the cinnamon steep for 10 minutes before sipping or adding the cream (it gets spicier as it cools, and needs time to cool to a safe temperature anyway). You can carefully remove the cinnamon sticks at this point if they bother you, but I usually leave them there.

Cinnamon tea variations

Here are some delicious spins on cinnamon tea.

  • Make it sweet: Add honey, maple syrup, or sugar to taste. While I enjoy unsweetened tea, cinnamon and honey are a match made in heaven.
  • Make it creamy: Add a little half cream, heavy cream, whole milk, or any other regular creamer you enjoy.
  • Make it very hot: Add a few whole cloves, or a pod of cardamom. You can also try thin slices of fresh ginger or turmeric.
  • Make it acidic: Steep your tea with a few thin slices of orange or lemon.
  • Make it caffeinated: Once the pot is removed from the heat, steep the black or green tea for the length of time stated on the package. Or buck that concept and try adding a cinnamon stick to your hot cup of coffee (I love it).
  • Enjoy it cold: This tea is nice over ice too. Let it cool to room temperature and refrigerate it for later.

Cinnamon tea notes

  • Expect the density of your tea to vary slightly from batch to batch. Some cinnamon sticks weigh more than others (ranging from 4 to 7 grams) and some seem to have a stronger flavor than others.
  • Some recipes suggest reusing cinnamon sticks, but I don’t recommend that. They lose a significant amount of flavor every time they are used. It takes a long time to air dry, and I was worried about mold or bacteria growing while wet.

Boil one cup of water, then pour it over the cinnamon sticks in the cup. Allow to steep for 10 minutes before sipping or adding cream. You can carefully remove the cinnamon sticks at this point, but I don’t bother.
