These are some notes on the ingredients in this quick apple pie bread. Swipe to the recipe card for a printable list with full amounts!
- butter – With or without salt, at room temperature.
- Sugar – Regular granulated sugar works here or you can use light brown sugar.
- Ayran – I love the sweetness and extra moisture that buttermilk brings to this bread. If it is not in the refrigerator, I will prepare it easily at home buttermilk substitute with lemon juice (or vinegar) and regular milk.
- Baking powder
- Egg
- Vanilla – Make sure to use real vanilla extract (or equal parts vanilla paste) for the best flavor.
- flour – The best flour for this apple bread is all-purpose flour. Bread flour does not work in quick bread recipes.
- apple – Any firm, sweet tart apple pie that you would use for an apple pie filling will work here. My favorite is Granny Smith. Other good choices are Honeycrisp and Braeburn apples. Before starting, peel and chop the apples.
- Supplements – Optional, but I like to bake chopped walnuts and raisins into my apple bread for added texture and flavor.
For streusel
- Brown Sugar – I like to use light or dark brown sugar on top. Powdered sugar will also work.
- flour
- butter – I think it’s easier to crumble butter when it’s cold from the fridge.
- nuts – Chopped walnuts or pecans are my favorite for this recipe.
How to make apple pie bread
Like banana bread and other quick bread recipes, this recipe has no yeast, so the dough comes together quickly! Here’s a quick step-by-step. Printable instructions can be found on the recipe card.
- Prepare the streusel. Start by cutting the butter into the brown sugar and flour, make a crumbled streusel, then fold in the nuts.
- Prepare the dough. Next, beat the extra butter and sugar together in a separate bowl. Add buttermilk, baking powder, egg and vanilla and mix. Slowly mix in the flour.
- Add apples. Finally, stir in your chopped apples. Other toppings like nuts and/or raisins can be included at the same time.
- Add streusel topping. Transfer the bread dough to a lined baking sheet and sprinkle with nut streusel.
- To cook. Place your apple pie loaf in the oven at 350ºF for about an hour. I usually let the bread cool slightly in the pan before removing it to a wire rack. This apple pie bread is delicious while it’s still warm, or you can let it cool to room temperature (I admire self-control!).
Recipe Tips and Variations
- Fix the ceiling. I like to use a strip of parchment to line the bottom and both ends of my loaf pan. It makes the bread much easier to remove after it cools down a bit. If you don’t have one parchment papergrease the pan well with butter or shortening instead.
- Do not over mix. As with most baked goods, over-mixing quick bread dough will give you a dense, hard bread that doesn’t rise as it should. Be careful not to overdo it when combining the ingredients.
- Make it nut free. If you prefer nut-free streusel, replace the nuts with oatmeal. apple crisp.
- Skip the streusel. You can also leave out the streusel altogether and give your apple shortbread a final sprinkling of cinnamon sugar like I did in my dish. cinnamon apple bread.
- Add a candy. Take the easy juice from me apple bread to drizzle over.
