An Americano cocktail is a sweet and bitter soft drink of Italian origin. It’s the perfect pre-dinner drink or a refreshing weekend afternoon pick-me-up. The Americano is a uniquely light drink that strikes a balance between bitter and sweet. This sparkling cold drink is great on a hot day, but the complex, warm flavors are also acceptable before Thanksgiving dinner.
Americano cocktails are made using Campari, sweet vermouth and soda. If you love Negroni, this is the drink for you. Served in a taller glass with soda instead of gin, the Negroni is actually a derivative of the American Cocktail. Don’t rule this out if you don’t like Negroni (I don’t!). It’s like a light Negroni, and you can adjust it to suit your preferences.
There is nothing in common between Americano cocktails and American coffee, Except that both of them became very popular with Americans visiting Italy. The American cocktail seems to have been inspired by another drink, the Milano Torino, which is made with only Campari and Vermouth di Torino. There are several origin stories, and I’m not sure which one is true. All I know is that this is a nice cocktail! I hope you enjoy it.
Americano cocktail ingredients
These cocktails require four basic ingredients plus ice.
1) Campari
Campari is a vibrant red wine. The brand describes the flavors as “delicately bitter with a velvety aftertaste. Intense notes of orange, herbs and wood.” Look for Campari near the liqueurs or other red wines in your liquor store.
2) Sweet vermouth, such as Dolin.
Sweet vermouth is dark red or brown, not clear. Dolin is my favorite brand for Americanos. It’s not as sweet as others like Carpano Antico.
Vermouth Storage Tips: Vermouth is a wine, so it spoils over time like all wines (but it lasts longer than a regular bottle, thanks to the brandy). Opened bottles of vermouth will keep in the refrigerator for one to two months.
3) Soda drink
The soda adds some relief. Any unflavored sparkling water will do, though I like Fever Tree or Topo Chico for the abundant little bubbles they produce.
4) A slice of fresh orange
An orange slice gives you a fresh, familiar flavor and aroma. Don’t skip it. To maximize the orange flavor, you can gently run the orange peel around the rim of the glass before dropping it in.

How to Make Your Own Americano Cocktail
The standard ratio is equal parts Campari and sweet vermouth. But who says you can’t customize the recipe to your liking?
make it less bitter
It may take some getting used to the bitter flavors of Campari. You can reduce the bitterness by using less Campari or balance it with extra sweet vermouth.
make it less alcohol
As written in the recipe below, an Americano is as strong as a 1 1/2 ounce drink made with 80-proof liquor like vodka, gin, or tequila. To reduce the alcohol content, use more soda and less Campari and vermouth. Try just 1/2 ounce or 1 ounce of Campari and vermouth for a lower-alcohol drink.
What do you serve with your American coffee?
Americano is usually served as: aperitif. Italian liqueurs are designed to stimulate the appetite before a meal. These cocktails are usually somewhat bitter, rich in carbonation and drier than sweet.
Serve your Americano cocktails with Italian or Mediterranean-flavored appetizers in general. Campari is bitter, and salty, sweet, creamy or fatty foods will tone it down. You can’t go wrong with this choice. Cheese board.

Make it lighter: For a drink with a lower alcohol content and lighter flavor, use 1 ounce or less of each Campari and vermouth.
