Is there anything better than a warm, comforting drink during the colder months? Hot chocolate is a nostalgic treat for many of us, bringing back cozy memories of a cup on a cold day. But what if you could enjoy this classic favorite while also giving your body a boost of sustained nutrition and energy?
I created this recipe to combine the delicious chocolate flavor we all crave with nourishing ingredients like raw cacao and plant-based protein. It’s the perfect way to warm up, feel good, and provide your body with the nutrients it needs to thrive.Without relying on processed cocoa or added sugars.
I added some black pepper to this recipe — which has been traditionally added to hot cocoa preparations for centuries, as I learned on a local trip to Nicaragua. It makes an interesting peppery flavor combination!
Cocoa beauty tip
Because I love chocolate so much, I often remind myself to use it as an occasional treat. Why? This is because it contains cocoa Caffeine It contains theobromine, even when labeled “raw” (so avoid making it a staple in your daily diet).
Can we use cocoa powder (because it’s cheaper) instead of cocoa powder? While both powders start from the same place – the Theobroma cocoa The tree – how it is treated is what makes the difference. I suggest staying away from cocoa, as it is processed and often contains added or other sugar Sweeteners.
Cocoa is the raw form of the cocoa bean, is less processed, and has stronger antioxidant effects and health benefits. For example, 100 grams of raw cocoa powder has an oxygen radical absorbance capacity of 95,500, which then drops to 62,100 for cocoa nibs, and 26,000 for cocoa powder. Pretty cool, huh?!
You can choose to purchase Cocoa At any health food store, or find some great sites online where you can buy them raw, organic, and in bulk (which is my preference).
Beauty tip for vegan protein powder
A nice afternoon protein shake is a great way to get easy-to-digest protein, helping to keep you full and fueled in the afternoon.
Smoothies are a real lifesaver, as blending makes them “pre-digested”, so you can get all those nutrients and not worry that you’re not chewing enough (not all of us have time to sit down for an extra half hour+ and chew every day!!).
I personally like to use Garden of Life Organic Plant Protein Powder with Vitamins and Probiotics (in vanilla flavour). It’s my favorite because it’s not chalky, and it’s all non-GMO.
This raw protein is loaded with 17 grams of organic plant protein per serving to build muscle, and is easy to digest and assimilate.
