BOO! Today we have Spooky Homemade Twix Bars! You don’t need to be a professional baker to make these delicious and easy homemade Halloween treats. These bars are made from a delicious brown sugar pastry dough that is baked until crispy. Then they are layered with sweet apple cider caramel with vanilla and sea salt. Cover each homemade Twix in chocolate, then have fun decorating each bar with cute candy eyes. They are incredibly tasty and will be a favorite this Halloween.
I’m so happy – it’s scary season! I may be a grown woman running her own business (with my sweet mom, of course), but I’ll never be too old for a little Halloween fun. To be honest, I still feel like I was a teenager, with more responsibility.
But I’m trying to let some of my adults go for October. It’s the time of year to watch your favorite Halloween movies, bake spooky delicious desserts, mix spooky cocktails, and even host a Halloween party!
It’s so much fun!
Every Halloween season, I have a lot of fun making at least a few new spooky themed desserts and/or drinks for you. Even in the busiest times of life, we can all find time for at least a night or two of fall Halloween cooking.
I LOVE making homemade candies this time of year. Knowing that we all love a good Twix Bar, I thought it might be fun to recreate these in a spooky way.
Turns out they’re fun, easier to make than you might think, and super delicious. Apple juice caramel is truly the best. We love pairing it with dark chocolate!
Here are the Horrible Details
Composition
- brown sugar
- salted butter
- vanilla extract
- an egg
- all purpose flour
- apple juice (not apple cider vinegar)
- flake sea salt
- dark chocolate
- coconut oil
- candy eyes (you can find them here Amazon, Target, Walmartand most grocery stores)
Step 1: prepare the pastry dough
In a bowl, beat together the brown sugar, butter, and vanilla. Add 1 egg at room temperature, then the flour. Beat until the dough sticks to the bowl.
Press the dough into a square brown pan lined with parchment paper. I like to use a 9×9 inch pan, but if you use an 8×8 inch pan, just note that your bars will come out thicker than mine.
Bake the cookies until they are golden and just put them on top.
Step 2: Caramelize the apple juice
This is my fail-safe, no-fuss caramel. To do this, it is enough to boil apple cider vinegar with brown sugar and butter.
Boil for about 9-10 minutes for a soft, chewy caramel. The longer you boil the caramel, the harder it will become. Ideally, you want a soft, chewy caramel, so leave it in the oven for about 10 minutes.
The sauce will foam and thicken. Next, add sea salt and pour the caramel over the baked cookie crust.
Step 3: put caramel
Put the pan in the refrigerator for 2 hours or in the freezer for 30 minutes. I prefer to freeze the sticks because it makes them much easier to cut.
Once the bars are cut, it’s time to dip.
Step 4: dip in chocolate and dip
Dip each bar into the melted chocolate. Again, it helps if the sticks are frozen. The chocolate will fall onto the bars quickly and will be less messy.
Place each stick on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
Step 5: to decorate
The last step is the most fun: sweet candy eyes! Decorate with candy eyes as desired before chocolate sets.
The awesome thing about this process is that no skills are required. Just throw some candy in the eyes and call it a day. The bars will look cute and creepy no matter what.
It’s all about that messy, spooky vibe, so embrace the flaws here. No two spooky Twix should be alike.
Keep these in the fridge, but take them out a few minutes before serving. We find caramel tastes best when it’s soft and chewy!
You can pack them up and take them to your school’s Halloween party. Or serve them at a Halloween party full of adults.
No matter which route you take, these spooky bars are sure to be loved.
