All you need to make DIY chocolate spreads are chocolate chips and nuts. Add a pinch of salt if you like.
Feel free to use dark chocolate chips, semi-sweet chocolate chips, milk chocolate chips, or even white chocolate chips.
For a fun flavor change, try peanut butter chips or butterscotch chips!
I like to buy roasted nuts for convenience and time savings. If you prefer to start with raw hazelnuts and roast them at home, that’s fine too.

How to make chocolate recipe
If your nuts are raw rather than roasted, you can roast them at home by spreading them in a single layer on a baking sheet.
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit and toast the nuts on the middle rack for about seven minutes or until lightly browned.
Discard the hazelnut shell, which falls off easily. Some stubborn skins are better left.
Process the nuts in a food processor or high-powered blender until they have a completely smooth texture similar to creamy peanut butter.
Stop every few minutes to scrape down the sides. Depending on the power of your machine, this step should take about five to ten minutes.
Tip: If you don’t have a food processor or high-speed blender, replace the nuts with one cup of nut butter. No processing steps are required for this option.
Carefully melt the chocolate chips in the microwave or using the double boiler method.
Stir the melted chocolate sauce into the hazelnut butter and process until evenly combined.
Transfer your homemade 2-ingredient Nutella to a mason jar or covered container.
While the spray is fine to keep at room temperature for a few days, I recommend storing the jar in the refrigerator for optimal freshness.
Questions and tips for success
Is the recipe vegan and gluten-free?
The 2-ingredient chocolate spread is naturally gluten-free. It can also be vegan as long as you use dairy-free chocolate chips.
Can I make this hazelnut spread without a blender?
You can do it! If you don’t have a food processor or high-speed blender, use one cup of store-bought hazelnut butter instead of two cups of whole hazelnuts.
Simply mix melted chocolate chips into hazelnut butter to make your own instant Nutella spread.
Note: A regular blender probably won’t be powerful enough to make homemade nut butter. I recommend a quality food processor such as either a Vitamix or a Cuisinart.

If your hazelnuts are not already roasted, spread them in a single layer on a baking sheet. Preheat oven to 400 F and roast for seven minutes or until lightly browned. To prepare the recipe, first discard the hazelnut shell, which comes off easily. If you have a food processor or high-speed blender, just process the nuts for about five to ten minutes, stopping every few minutes to scrape down the sides. Eventually, it will turn into a smooth fatty tissue.(If you don’t have a food processor or high-speed blender, use one cup of hazelnut butter instead of two cups of hazelnuts. Use a spoon to blend.) Carefully melt the chocolate chips, then add the melted chocolate to the hazelnut butter and process until evenly combined. Transfer to a mason jar or covered container.
