Elixirs are a wonderful, refreshing way to boost your body’s wellness and healing. The right elixir can be a powerful natural remedy for many of life’s problems, and give your health a nice little boost, too. (This is especially helpful during those times of year when everyone is sick, or you just feel like you need a little boost!)
This Lemon Lymph Elixir recipe uses the cleansing power of bright fresh lemon, raw honey, and tangy fresh ginger to naturally boost your digestion, lymphatic system, and immunity. It’s perfect for those times when you’re feeling sluggish, tired, or sick and want to give your immune system a little boost.
Your lymphatic system is a very important component of your overall health, and sometimes it needs support to feel your best.
What is the lymphatic system?
The lymphatic system fights infection and disease in the body by producing and transporting white blood cells. It is a large and complex system that contains not only lymph nodes and lymph vessels, but also other tissues such as bone marrow, and organs such as the spleen and appendix. (If you’ve ever wondered what these organs do, now you know! 🙂 )
Your lymphatic system also absorbs fats from your digestive system, and removes waste products and abnormal cells from your lymph. Lymph, also known as lymph fluid, is the excess fluid drained from your cells and tissues that contains the above-mentioned nasties and disease-causing agents, as well as nutrients such as protein and minerals.
Your body has hundreds of lymph nodes, including many in your neck, abdomen, chest, armpits, and groin. These nodes help filter the fluid around them before sending it back toward your heart so it can filter out unwanted material and drain it near your heart.
Your lymphatic system may stop working normally if too much of this fluid builds up, causing a blockage, or if an infection inflames your lymph nodes, causing them to swell.
To prevent this, you need to make sure your body is prepared to help your lymphatic system get rid of all the things that can make you sick.
Fortunately, that’s where this elixir comes in. 😉
lemon power
If you’ve been with us for a while, my dear, you know how much I love lemons! Lemons are like pure sunshine energy. They are bright, cleansing, powerful, and effective in their ability to move stagnant energy through your body.
I start each day with hot water with fresh lemon juice (sometimes I add a little fresh ginger, too), because it helps flush toxins out of my system and gives my cells an energizing, antioxidant boost. Note that this is lemon water, not lemonade, which often contains extra sugar that can cause your blood sugar to drop. You don’t want to drink this first thing in the morning—or ever, really!
Lemons are an excellent source of antioxidants like hesperidin, which helps prevent heart disease, and vitamin C, which is essential for a healthy immune system and glowing skin. They’re also a great source of fiber, which is key to healthy digestion and blood sugar regulation. Pectin, a soluble fiber found in lemons, can help lower blood sugar levels by slowing down the body’s digestion of sugars and starches.
Amazing ginger
Ginger root has been consumed in many cuisines around the world and in medicine for thousands of years. Its health benefits really speak for themselves!
The main compound in ginger, gingerol, is a powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. It can help reduce oxidative stress in your body, which can make you sick and damage your organs and tissues.
Ginger is also a well-known natural remedy for nausea and morning sickness, and can aid in healthy digestion.
Raw Honey: The Power of Nature nectar
On our farm here in Hawaii, we have about a million bees. I have learned so much about the amazing world of bees, which exhibit a great deal of innate intelligence. Please check out this podcast with beloved local beekeeper Jamie.shares some of his wisdom. I have a bee suit, and when I’m in the beehives with swarms of bees everywhere, I really feel like I’m in a mysterious, sacred kingdom. So, I love raw honey and consume it myself almost daily.
Not all honey is created equal! Most of the honey you buy at the supermarket is pasteurized, which destroys many of its natural benefits.
Please make sure to only buy raw honey. Raw honey is an excellent source of antioxidants, thanks to the phytonutrients it contains. Phytonutrients are compounds that help protect plants from potential environmental damage, such as insects or even UV rays. Raw honey is also naturally antibacterial and antifungal, two important healing properties that can keep your body healthy.
Honey is also an old natural remedy for sore throats and coughs, and is especially effective when taken with hot tea and lemon.
Cinnamon warm up
The cinnamon is what makes this elixir really stand out from the usual lemon, ginger and honey drinks.
Like ginger, cinnamon has been used in cooking and medicine for thousands of years. The main component in cinnamon, cinnamaldehyde, is responsible not only for cinnamon’s unique aroma and flavor, but also for many of its health benefits.
Cinnamon is also an excellent source of antioxidants, including polyphenols. Polyphenols are plant compounds that help reduce inflammation and protect the body from disease-causing free radicals, and may even protect against cancer and heart disease!
Cinnamon can also help support blood sugar levels and protect your body from infection.
