They’re based on the popular internet two-ingredient dough trend, where you combine self-raising flour and Greek yogurt to create a yeast-free dough.

These homemade bagels are deliciously soft, dense and tender, just like traditional New York-style bagels.

Ingredients

Self-rising flour – You can buy a packet of self-raising flour at most grocery stores. Or make your own self-rising flour by combining 1 cup all-purpose flour or gluten-free all-purpose flour with 1 1/2 tsp baking powder and 1/2 tsp salt.

Feel free to substitute all-purpose flour. Although you can go with whole wheat flour, the resulting texture is denser and slightly tougher.

Choose rye flour to make pumpkin pretzels. Increase the baking powder by 1/4 teaspoon, as baked goods made with rye flour will not rise as well as those made with white flour.

Alternatively, you can make keto pretzels with almond flour if you follow the recipe variation further down in this post.

yogurt – Typically, 2-ingredient bread dough calls for Greek yogurt. You can easily replace it with a vegan alternative. I like Kite Hill Greek Yogurt dairy free.

If you want to use plain yogurt instead, reduce the amount to only 3/4 cup, as non-Greek yogurt is thinner.

Substitutes for Greek yogurt

If you don’t want to use any yogurt, I successfully tested the recipe with four other options.

Canned pumpkin or mashed sweet potatoes work really well as a nutritious plant-based replacement. Add 2/3 cup of pumpkin puree for every 1 cup of yogurt in the recipe.

You can use 2/3 cup of applesauce for apple pretzels or banana puree and mini chocolate chips to make banana pretzels.

How to make easy bagels with two ingredients

The first step is to preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

Grease a baking tray well or line it with parchment paper. This will prevent the pretzels from sticking to the pan while cooking.

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the self-raising flour and Greek yogurt. If you’re adding raisins or chocolate chips, stir them in now too.

Depending on the climate, humidity, and type of flour you choose, your dough can be either too sticky or too dry. Gradually add a little more flour or yogurt as needed.

Knead the pretzel dough with your hands to form a large ball.

Now cut it into small pieces and make a bagel, making a hole in the centers. Place the unbaked shaped dough on the prepared baking sheet, leaving space between each one.

Bake on the middle rack of the oven for 20 minutes or until cooked through with the classic pretzel texture.

Spread with cream cheese, butter or peanut butter.
